Hyaluronic Acid: Nature’s Answer to Aging Skin

hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate) offers some of the best anti-aging benefits of all skin care ingredients. Some reports dubbed this active ingredient as the “key fountain of youth.” The reason why is because this ingredient naturally occurs in both humans and animals and it is commonly abundant in young skin. As you age, the levels of hyaluronic acid become depleted.  Poor diet, smoking and free radical damage along with hormonal changes may also be associated with this decline.  Although the forces of nature may rob you of hyaluronic acid, you can now get your supply from quality skin care products.  Research says that when used with antioxidants, it can contribute to a more effective absorption.  When combined with additional natural ingredients and natural preservatives here’s what you can expect this ingredient can do for your skin:

  • Moisture Retention: Hyaluronic acid has the capacity to retain about 1,000 times its weight in water. This means that your skin will have the maximum hydration possible. This ability to retain water gives you your youthful glow and makes your skin vibrant. Compare to a plant without water?  Water is essential.  When your body produces less hyaluronic acid, you skin becomes dry and loses elasticity. This can produce unwanted lines and wrinkles to your skin. If you use products with hyaluronic acid, you protect your skin and assist in reversing the aging process.  Think of hyaluronic acid like a sponge that can continue to absorb moisture.
  • Collagen production: When you maintain collagen fibers in your skin, the skin will remain firm and taut. This will ensure that you prevent skin sagging. Depletion of collagen may result in loss of elasticity leading to ill-toned muscles. Hyaluronic acid can change all that, particularly when combined with antioxidants like pomegranate and botanicals.
  • Reduces skin irritation and inflammation:  Evidence has shown that when hyaluronic acid is applied topically, it may reduce skin irritation from different causes such as sunburn, rosacea and even skin peels.  Hyaluronic acts to protect our skin and keep the skin moist and supple at the same time.  Another reason to replenish hyaluronic acid as we age.

Hyaluronic acid is a must for any anti aging skin care regimen.  There are also some vegetables that can promote its production. Soy is known to raise the estrogen level in the body.  It is said that as estrogen increases, the level of hyaluronic acid in your body tends to rise.  This may be part of the reason the skin shows more signs of aging after menopause.  (Please consult your physician regarding soy intake.) Increasing your zinc levels by eating spinach, beets and beans also helps. We also suggest to eat foods rich in magnesium like apples, avocados, tomatoes, pineapples, and strawberries since low levels of magnesium in the body means lesser production of natural hyaluronic acid.

Some people even receive hyaluronic acid injections.  This form of hyaluronic acid is synthesized but plumps and fills areas as a temporary solution.   Of course we prefer replenishing your stores naturally via non invasive quality skin care and healthy diet.  It’s not too late to start adding this amazing skin care ingredient to your regimen today!
