The Anti-Aging Effects of Meditation
Meditation and age prevention may seem like two different entities but the fact is that they are very much connected to each other.
As you probably know, meditation is one of the best ways to combat stress. When you are under stress, your body produces large amounts of cortisol. Cortisol is also known as the stress hormone. Normal levels of cortisol can be healthy and can boost your everyday performance. Unfortunately, given today’s hectic lifestyle, chances are your cortisol levels are constantly on the rise. Cortisol can contribute to premature aging.
Aside from inhibiting production of cortisol, meditation can also increase the melatonin production in your body. Unlike cortisol, melatonin can slow down the effects of aging. Melatonin is a hormone that is usually associated with sleep. During bedtime, your melatonin level increases, making you feel sluggish and sleepy. When you wake up in the morning, your exposure to sunlight causes your melatonin levels to go down. Sleeping is not the only way to boost your melatonin levels. Research has shown that meditating on a regular basis can also restore your body’s melatonin to a healthy level.
If this is your first time to try meditation then you are probably uncertain as to how you should proceed. Try the tips below to help you meditate successfully:
- Find a quiet place. Naturally, the first thing you need to do would be to look for a place in your home where you won’t be distracted by any noise or any activities.
- Focus on your breathing. Concentrating on your breathing is the simplest way to begin meditating. Focus on the path your breath takes.
- Calmly clear your mind from all thoughts. When you find yourself getting distracted with thoughts, don’t panic or feel frustrated. Let the thoughts come and go and gradually return to your breathing.
- Keep practicing. Practice meditation on a daily basis and you will eventually master it.
Aside from meditation, it’s also important that you incorporate whole foods into your diet.
