Ayurveda Inspired Beauty Care Tips for Each Dosha

Ayurveda is “The Science of Life”.  It is said that over 3,000 years ago the great sage Dhanwantari was sitting in a profound meditation in the middle of a forest when Nature revealed to him the beneficial properties of all the trees and plants, the knowledge of the human system, and the fact that total well being is achieved when we’re in harmony with our minds, bodies, as well a all of nature.

Budday FallWhile we are all the same at the core, there is also an understanding in Ayurveda of the differences in all of us as and this is expressed in the Three Ayurveda Doshas:

Vatta (Air and Ether)

Pitta (Fire and Water)

Kapha (Earth and Water)

All people are a combination of all the doshas, but for each of us, one is more dominant than the other.  In fact, which dosha presents as dominant may change as you age and transition through life’s many stages. Your dosha is very important in the Ayurvedic tradition and it is understood to affect all areas of your health and wellness, including your skin.

For example…

Those who have a Vatta dosha have fine or delicate skin that, while blessed with a fine porcelain look, is also prone to signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines as well as eczema and other skin irritations and sensitivities.

In contrast, those with a dominant Pitta dosha have fair skin, often with freckles and/or moles.  Pitta skin is also known for the warm glow it emits.  While this dosha does share the sensitivities of Vatta, they’re a bit different and generally present as inflammation, pigmentation issues, rashes, rosacea etc.

Kapha skin on the other hand is prone to large pores, oiliness, and acne.  It’s also thicker and therefore feels soft to the touch and is much more resilient to signs of aging.

Given these differences, the overall beauty care regimen required by each of the Ayurvedic Doshas in order to facilitate the maximum health of the skin differs as well.

When Vatta is the dominant dosha, hydration is essential.  Individuals with this skin type must use beauty products that support, protect, and moisturize regularly along with the rest of their skin care regimen.

People with Pitta dosha require the regular use of products that are geared toward addressing their inflammation, soothing their sensitive skin, and protecting it from the harsh environment.  Gentle formulations are a must as well when this Dosha is dominant.

And, those with Kapha as the estrongest presenting dosha must cleanse very regularly with skin care products created to include ingredients known for cleaning pores, dissolving oil, and exfoliating dead skin cells.

Of course there are some general rules everyone should maintain regardless of their primary Ayurvedic Dosha when it comes to beauty care as well.

Avoid skin care products with harsh chemicals and abrasives as they will only further imbalance the body.  Instead, Ayurveda recommends the use of those remedies Nature shared with Dhanwantari all those many years ago.  This is what will bring the doshas back into balance thereby creating total health and wellness in each and every part of the human system.

In addition Ayurveda recommends, meditation, deep breathing practice, and yoga in order to lleviate stress and encourage a more youthful radiant skin which only comes from total, wholistic health of the mind, body, and spirit.
