Be Gentle on Your Skin and the Planet with Non Toxic Cleaning Products | Recipes Included!

Cleaning is a necessity. It’s definitely not a favorite thing on my list, but, neither is a dirty house!  So, clean we must.  And, believe it or not, for most of us, cleaning with some sort of product, even soap, is at least a daily occurrence; if not MUCH more.  As a result, you really need to consider the types of cleaning prold brooms, mop bucket, natural cleaningoducts you’re using, their ingredients, and whether or not they’re safe for you and the planet.

Many commercial cleaning products are made with harsh chemicals that aren’t good for your skin or any other part of your body for that matter,  When you clean, even though you may wear gloves, you’re getting at least the mist if not the splatter of the products on your face and other exposed areas.  It takes just a few moments for the skin to absorb whatever is put on it – be that beauty products, air pollution, or, cleaning products.  And, it’s understood that chemicals absorbed by the skin enter directly into the blood stream, which makes them even more dangerous.

Not only are you absorbing these chemicals through your skin though, when most people clean, unless the weather is warm, these cleaners are used in enclosed spaces.  As a result, they’re inhaled and absorbed by your respiratory system too.

It’s not just affecting you either.  These toxic chemicals also have negative effects on the environment as well.  Each time you use them they wash down the drain, are thrown into the landfills, sprayed into the air, or dumped into the grass.  From there, these toxins enter the soil and water supply thereby entering the food chain and sharing their Ick with the whole planet.

Not to worry though, you can still get your home, office, car, or whatever else you’re cleaning today just as clean withOUT these funky ingredients!  Natural cleaners are becoming easier to find and lowering in price as well.

That said, you don’t even have to use commercial cleaning products at all.  Instead, you can make your own homemade natural cleaners using ingredients like white vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, and essential oils that are gentle on your skin and the planet.

Here are a few recipes to help you make the switch to non toxic cleaners and start saving yourself and the planet.

General Spray Cleaner

Ingredients

1 spray bottle

white vinegar

water

essential oils of your choice (tea tree and lavender are good choices for their anti bacterial and anti fungal properties)

Directions

Fill your bottle 1/2 full with water, and fill the rest with the white vinegar.  Add 20-40 drops of your essential oils depending on the size of your spray bottle.  Use on any surfaces that need a good spray down.  Be sure to spray this cleaner on the surface and wait about 5 min before wiping off to allow the vinegar and essential oils to kill all the germs and bacterial before wiping clean.

Abrasive Cleanser

Ingredients

1 C baking soda

1/4 C water

1/8 C lemon juice

Directions

Put baking soda, water, and lemon juice into a large bowl.  Mix until a paste forms.  If you need more water or baking soda to get the consistency right that’s fine.  Then, apply paste to tub, sink, oven, or anywhere else you need some help scrubbing something clean.  You’ll need some elbow grease to really get this going but it’s worth it.  Once you’re done, rinse clean.  This paste will help you scrub off the dirt and shine the surface up in the process.  For added scrubbing power once paste is applied, spray over area with your general cleanser (recipe above).  The vinegar and baking soda will react giving a scrubbing bubbles effect.  Allow to stop then wipe clean.

Air Freshener

Ingredients

Water

Essential Oils

Directions

Fill spray bottle with water.  Add 15-30 drops of your favorite essential oil(s) depending on the size of your bottle.  Spray around house, car, etc the same way you would an air freshener.
