When many of us think of licorice those yummy strings of red and black candy are what often come to mind, but there is much more to licorice, especially with regards to beauty.

Used in Ayurvedic medicine as a treatment for inflammation, burns, wounds and other general skin problems for many years, licorice is very soothing to dry or irritated skin.  These same properties have made licorice an excellent acne treatment as well.

Licorice Root has also been found to reduce hyper pigmentation and other forms of skin discoloration.  And, it has been found to aid in reducing the redness and inflammation of Rosacea gently.

What makes licorice root so effective for skin care?  In the early 1990s Japanese scientists discovered the substances in the herb that were highly beneficial for the skin.  These substances include:

Glabridin ~ Glabridin is an incredible skin whitening agent.  It is enormously helpful in decreasing melanin production and re-balancing the dermal cells.  The Glabridin in Licorice root does all this gently too; unlike other chemical skin brighteners.  These properties help make licorice root ideal for use under the eyes where pigment exists, and is often unwanted – at least in such high doses!

Glabrene ~ Glabrene has been found to be a potent anti-oxidant and appears to be just as powerful as natural Vitamin E.

Licochalcone ~ Licochalcone offers amazingly effective anti-acne properties like the regulation of oil production as well as the elimination of bacteria on the skin. It also helps to soothe Rosacea & acne-prone skin helping to make licorice root the perfect ingredient for calming allergy prone and/or sensitive skin types.

Stearyl Glycyrrhetinate ~ Steryl Glycyrrhetinate provides soothing anti-inflammatory benefits, which are needed by those with Rosacea, acne, and sensitive skin to help curb redness and reduce the effects of these conditions oveall.
