What Are You Paying For When You Buy Skin Care Products; Ingredients or Advertising?

Do you know what you’re getting for the money you’re spending on your skin care products?

As a Licensed Aesthetician I’m frequently asked “why does that skin care products you use cost so much when the drugstore brand is less?”  I can tell you with certainty it’s because these products aren’t made with the same level of effective skin care ingredients many professional grade skin care products are.

These lower priced products are not generally based on quality ingredients.  Instead, they’re made predominantly with fillers like water, and “emulsifiers” made of synthetic waxes as well as ingredients that are anything but natural.  Also, a lot of the money that is spent to create the product is spent on marketing; not the product itself.

So, how can a product have high percentages of quality, results-producing ingredients but be sold at a low price in grocery stores, discount stores or multi-level sales companies?  It can’t.  When the price is low the percentage of “active” ingredients is significantly reduced and so are the claims of effectiveness.

So then you can count on the more expensive product to be worth it for sure right?  Not always.  For example, consider department stores.  The bottle may be beautiful and it comes at a higher price but the cost of the commercials for these manufacturers is exorbitant.  Television, magazines, paid ads are all promotional expenses that rely heavily on the image vs. the ingredients. Then of course the commissioned representative. Again this means there’s minimal room left for quality ingredients as the product’s budget is so ad heavy.

So what can you do if you want the most effective skin care products for your money? Look for a true professional product like those from Sevani or “true” professionals.  These products aren’t sold over the counter, instead, they’re sold in salons, spas and select establishments.
